Zodiac Jars

For my final HND project at college, I used plain white bonbon jars as my starting point.  I manipulated each one to represent a sign of the zodiac. It was a great opportunity to consolidate what I had learned about slip-casting, slab-building, carving, modelling and abstract thought. This was my grad exhibition display in 2022.

There are 13 star constellations around the equator so there used to be 13 signs of the zodiac. Around 500 BCE, Babylonian astrologers divided the sky into twelve 30° arcs and associated a zodiac constellation with each. This meant that one constellation had to get the boot, and Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, drew the short straw.  Two and a half millennia later I felt it was time to reinstate him, so here he is.
