I originally trained as a chemical engineer and previously had a career in engineering and commerce. Latterly I worked mainly in Africa where I developed technical solutions to promote financial inclusion and reduce poverty, including the successful M-PESA payment service in Kenya.
Deciding it was time for a change, I took a sabbatical and did a foundation diploma in Art & Design at City Lit in London, majoring in ceramics. I was hooked! So, I gave up the day job and did a Ceramics HND at Morley College (2022) where I gained a distinction. I now spend my days working with clay in my studio and am currently completing a BA(Hons) in Creative Practice (Ceramics).
From my first attempt at sculpting clay, I felt the joy of creativity, giving ‘mud’ form and purpose. Ceramics have longevity that few materials can claim as most ancient artifacts have either disintegrated over time or have been disassembled for raw materials, but the ceramics remain. They are a record of human existence from five thousand year old Minoan urns to the tiles on space shuttles. The possibilities for experimenting with ceramics are enormous. I am constantly experimenting with new ideas of what to make, and how to make and decorate it. Opening the kiln is always an adventure!
Home is Chiswick in West London, where I have my studio.
